Cut out spy is a spy or intelligence agent who has been "cut out" or isolated from his or her handlers or superiors and operates independently of their control or guidance. Cut out spies are often used to maintain secrecy and protect the identities of other agents or assets in the field. They are typically given a specific mission or objective and then left to figure out the best way to accomplish it without any direct support or guidance. Cut out spies are often highly trained and experienced operatives who are trusted to make good decisions in the field without any direct supervision.
